Core Chicago Area Public Libraries Tour

Friday, June 23, 2023
8:00 AM - 4:00PM
Event Code: COR2 - SOLD OUT

Come tour three unique Public libraries in the Chicago area. Check back for tour locations.  Library staff and architects will lead the tours and be available for questions. Lunch will be served.

Chicago Public library - Chinatown Branch
The 24,000 sf Chinatown Branch Library serves as a new civic, educational, and social hub for Chicago’s Chinatown neighborhood, providing a much-needed public gathering place geared toward inclusive community activities and driven by technology-based learning.  Completed in 2015, the two-story building has been designed for flexibility and utility. The community meeting area and children’s zone are placed at the ground level while teen and adult zones are situated on the second level. Like a traditional Chinese courtyard plan, all spaces connect to the central atrium room, providing clear orientation and spatial cohesion.

Chicago Public library - Independence Branch
This 65,000-square-foot hybrid library/ affordable housing project in Chicago combines a 6,000-square-foot branch library with a 44-unit affordable senior housing development. The two-story library supports reading and earning areas for all age groups, as well as a large community multi-purpose room which supports public lectures, gatherings, and events. The second floor of the library looks out over a large roof garden that covers the parking lot below and serves as an outdoor amenity space for the housing residents. Housing units all feature outdoor colored balconies spaces which speak to individual identity.

Skokie Library
The 133,000-square-foot Skokie Public Library was originally built in three phases, spanning 1960-2003. Significant updates were needed to better serve this diverse and dynamic community of 66,000 residents just outside of Chicago, so extensive discussions were held with community members and staff to identify the greatest needs. Completed in 2021, the renovated first and second floors are a welcoming and easy-to-navigate space that celebrates the collections in attractive and accessible ways. A wide range of spaces and rooms were created to allow for reading, relaxing, collaborating, and various events for all ages. Three exterior courtyards were also redesigned and integrated into the daily life of the library. Without adding area, the renovation added space, light, and views to allow for a completely re-imagined library experience. Highlights include the Studio, an expansive makerspace; an attractive and flexible storytime room; more inclusive restrooms; a cafe space; and a large and comfortable teen space.

Participants will learn how a library can be combined with a housing project, gain knowledge of how a library can be sensitively renovated to allow for a completely reimagined library experience, and find out how a library can be designed to be flexible for future changes.

IRRT

Global Libraries as Advocates for Information Policy Change

Friday, June 23, 2023
8:00AM - 1:00PM
Event Code: IRRT1

The pandemic has raised our awareness and understanding of the need for information policies that support the ability of libraries to serve their communities. What are the persistent and new policy issues that libraries around the world must focus on? How can we strengthen our ability to influence legislative and legal change, and participate in the political process on the local, national, and global levels?

The range of policy issues of relevance to libraries is extraordinary: intellectual freedom and the rising challenges to the books and other resources we make available in our collections; privacy and the threats that we and our users face on protecting their identities; civil liberties and the constraints on freedom of action and speech; open access to research and educational resources, funding for libraries, and for education and research programs; copyright and the importance of fair use and the exceptions that enable libraries to carry out their services; the expansion and quality of access to the internet and the challenges of the digital divides in our communities; telecommunications policy and the growth of social media monopolies and issues like net neutrality; government information and the importance of guaranteeing that records of the work of our governments are openly and readily accessible; the survival of school libraries which are so essential to our library ecosystem; along with many more specific to local, national and global contexts.

Libraries must be at the core of the debates on information policy issues, as their success and effectiveness will increasingly be the ability to influence, interpret and apply new policy directions. By information policy, we mean those laws, regulations and programs established by governments and other organizations that define the strategies for the advancement and management of such things as technology, telecommunications and electronic information. It permeates all other policy areas, such as: education, foreign relations, science, culture, health, and perhaps most fundamentally, commerce, workforce development and business. Information policy is increasingly recognized as central to economic progress and social change.

This pre-conference will provide opportunities for learning about and sharing the impact of the pandemic on information policy around the world, provide a detailed look at several key policy areas, and inform how library professionals can be effective advocates in the legislative and legal arenas. It will also discuss the impact of the 2022 elections in the US and new governments around the world.

Inclusion, Resources, and Joy: Serving the Alzheimer’s/Dementia Community in Public Libraries

Thursday, June 22, 2023
9:00AM - 12:00PM
Event Code: ODLOS

The dementia community is larger than you might imagine. Within the United States, more than 6 million people are living with dementia. These numbers are expected to rise dramatically as life expectancy increases and as the greater impacts of COVID-related dementias are felt. Once you add in 15 million friends, family members, and caregivers, the numbers represent a significant segment of the population served by public libraries.

Public libraries are perfectly positioned to have a positive impact on this population. Although the Alzheimer’s Association and other organizations provide some programs and opportunities to connect, the geographic reach of these programs is limited, and many of them are centered in skilled nursing facilities. People aging in their homes often have little access to this kind of programming or resources, especially if they live in rural areas. Even in areas where these programs are offered, they can be difficult to reach for an older adult population, considering challenges with transportation and parking. Services for minority communities, who experience an even greater incidence of dementia, can raise even greater challenges.

In contrast, public libraries are embedded in almost every American community, offering a unique opportunity to welcome and engage the 81% of people who have dementia who are still living at home, as well as the people who care for and about them. Librarians already bring the professional values of customer service, equity and inclusion, lifelong learning, and information and technology access. This pre-conference will equip the same librarians to work with the underserved community of people with dementia: the science of dementia, the challenges and needs of people living with dementia, ways that libraries’ core services can provide cognitive and social stimulation to those with dementia, communication strategies, and practical information for creating high impact programs to engage this population and increase their quality of life.

PLA

New Digital Tools for Capturing Learning Outcomes and Impact

Friday, June 23, 2023
9:00AM -12:00PM
Event Code: PLA1

Learning outcomes in library programs like creativity, problem-solving, and community building are often recognizable to facilitators, but difficult to capture and measure an impact over time. The intent of this IMLS-funded digital toolkit from Madison Public Library, Skokie Public Library, and Waupaca Public Library is to revolutionize the way librarians capture, measure, and report learning outcomes in hands-on programming. This tool is explicitly designed with the programming librarian in mind, rather than an outside evaluator. Its purposeful design aims to make observational assessment accessible to libraries big and small and busy, boots-on-the-ground librarians.

Assessment and Evaluation practices for library programs that support continuous program improvement and meaningful reporting to stakeholders benefit a library's ability to serve a variety of diverse patrons. This toolkit is designed to allow librarians to tell the stories of the success of their programming with all audiences – and move away from traditional library metrics (like attendance) that do not tell the full picture.

This session will share the design principle and process of this ongoing project after its initial year of development. It will also share the initial testing results of the project build completed from January-April of 2023. After sharing the initial results, participants will have a chance to get their hands on the tool through an interactive workshop component, trying out the tool in real-time. The full grant team will be available to answer questions, observe, and gather feedback on the toolkit's design and usage.

Project Outcome: Data for Impact and Improvement

Friday, June 23, 2023
1:00PM -4:00PM
Event Code: PLA2

This interactive pre-conference workshop is designed to help public library professionals successfully evaluate their libraries’ programs and services using Project Outcome. The first half of the workshop covers strategies for identifying community needs, setting goals, measuring outcomes, and administering surveys. In the second half of the workshop, participants will learn how to analyze data and take action with results, and hear about how other libraries have made the most of their data. Throughout the workshop participants will work to develop an implementation plan that they can put into action at their libraries.

This workshop is intended for all public library staff and administrators who are interested in making improvements to the library’s programs and services. The workshop and focus on Project Outcome is particularly relevant to those who interact directly with library users and those who conduct evaluations. Attendees are not expected to have any data expertise or previous experience with Project Outcome. Prior to the workshop, we recommend that participants register for Project Outcome (www.projectoutcome.org) and review basic materials in the toolkit.

Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

● Understand what outcome measurement is and how it relates to other types of impact measurement
● Identify strategies for aligning outcome measurement with community needs and library goals
● Use the Project Outcome toolkit to administer surveys, analyze results, and create reports
● Discuss challenges and strategies for effective outcome measurement
● Take action with outcome data
